We’ve featured some really inspirational people on Business Boom so far, and this next creative is right up there with the best of them. Peter Smart is a passionate graphic designer who believes that “design is at it’s best when its simple – when people understand it intuitively.” Using simple graphic design, Peter decided to embark on a journey through Europe with the project of solving 50 problems in 50 days, which ultimately won various awards including D&AD’s Best New Blood 2012.

“I was really interested in the extent to which design can do anything to solve social problems. Rather than theorising from my computer chair, I thought the best way to find out was to take a risk and try and tackle problems head on.

So I travelled 2517 miles to try and solve 50 Problems in 50 Days using design. The adventure took me from the backstreets of London, through to the cobbled lanes of Turin and everywhere in between. While I travelled I also interviewed 12 of Europe’s top design studios to grasp their views on design’s power.”

“I learnt more than I ever could have imagined on the trip. Perhaps the most significant, I learnt that design can do nothing on its own. It’s a simple as that. Design cannot change the world singlehandedly. Being a designer is about being curious, exploring possibilities and collaborating with people who are specialists in their fields. Other people change the world, as designers we can help them get there – that’s a privileged position to be in.”

Day 13

Day 26

Day 29

“I started running my own design consultancy at 15. I’ve now had the privilege to work with over 50 organisations worldwide. Since publishing the project I’ve been overwhelmed by the interest. 50 Problems has won D&AD’s Best New Blood 2012, Site of the Day at Awwwards and Design Taxi and was awarded 18th most visited design website worldwide by Design Charts. I’ve also recently been invited to lead a workshop at A Better World by Design in September this year.”
